Saint Patrick's Day or
the Feast of Saint Patrick is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated
on 17th March, the anniversary of his death.
It commemorates Saint Patrick (c. AD
385–461), the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland,
and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.
The Day is generally
characterised by the attendance of church services, wearing of green
attire, public parades and processions, and the lifting of Lenten restrictions
on eating, and drinking alcohol, which is often proscribed
during the rest of the season.
St. Patrick's Day is a national holiday in the Republic of Ireland (but
not Northern Ireland, where it is a bank holiday); and in many parts of North
America, Britain, Canada and Australia.
WHICH ARE THE MAIN SYMBOLS USED
BY IRISH PEOPLE TO CELEBRATE THIS FESTIVAL?
SAINT PATRICK'S SYMBOLS
Over the years, the colour green and its association with St. Patrick's Day is a fact. Green ribbons and shamrocks are worn in celebration of St. Patrick's Day from the 17th century.
There's a legend about St. Patrick and the Shamrock (the plant that is a symbol of Ireland) that says
as follows:
"Saint Patrick while explaining Christianity to
the Pagans, plucked a shamrock from
around his feet and used the three-leaved shape to
explain that the Father, Son
and Holly Spirit were the three that are one".
A leprechaun is a kind of fairy in Irish
folklore, usually taking the form of an
old man, clad in a red or green coat,
who enjoy partaking in mischief.
The leprechauns spend all the time busily making
shoes, and store away all their coins in a hidden pot
of gold at the end of the rainbow.
"If ever captured by a human,
the leprechaun has the magical power to grant
three wishes in exchange for their release"
Bagpipes are a kind of musical
instrument, aerophones, using
enclosed reeds fed from a constant
reservoir of air in the form of a bag.
A rainbow is a natural
phenomenon noted for its beauty
and it's placed in the sky. It has
been a favourite of art and religion
throughout history.
A leprechaun's pot of gold in Irish
St. Patrick used an ash staff as a
walking stick as he walked over
Ireland spreading the word of
Christianity.
There's a legend that says as follows:
"He spoke for so long at a place now called Aspatria
(Ash of Patrick) to the people that the ash staff
took a root and became a living tree".
